Unisex T-Shirt featuring Potlatch design by Joshua watts
Potlatches are ceremonial events central to the cultures of Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. They involve gathering in memorial of loved ones, feasting, gift-giving, and the redistribution of wealth, often to establish or reinforce and solidify community bonds.
The Canadian government banned potlatches from 1884 to 1951, viewing them as an obstacle to assimilation.
Today the people of the northwest coast celebrate by hosting potlatches and feasts, proof of our people’s resilience in overcoming the systematic oppression.
