Many generations ago, an ancestors of the Tsuu-Baa-Asaxt (lake cowichan people) journeyed to the mountains and took their Hupuqinum (family treasure box) to seal it in a cave for safe keeping over the generations. Once the box was placed inside and sealed, they say a family of wolves came down from the mountain and lived outside the cave. To this day the Tsuu-Baa-Asaxt recognize this as the spirit of the mountain protecting the people's sacred gifts from the creator.
